NME Awards 'Big Gig' 2009 Announced.

The NME are really scraping the barrell with bands that they believe are 'godlike' nowadays. Oasis and The Clash are undeniably important, and the manics have deserved a reward like it for over a decade. The main point with lifetime achievment awards is they are given at 3 stages in a bands career, the point where they have been around for long enough to deserve it and are still relevent [manics and oasis], when a key member of the band dies and ficcle music journos believe its the time to give the rest of the band an award for it [the clash] or when they are long past the height of their career and are about to release a new album that they dont want to be forgotted. Funny how they accepted MTVs version of the award when they released their last album in 1994...

Im not denying that the cure are a good band, or saying that their success was not deserved. their last album reached number 8 in the charts and the new one has been recieving rave reviews. Its just, they aint godlike, are they? The award was given because of previous, better records, not their current releases. A very wise old man once said a musician is only as good as their last record. Its a shame not everybody shares this belief....

Anyway. The Gig. O2 Arena. Friday, February 26. Last years bill was headlined by the manics, supported by kaiser cheifs, bloc party, klaxons and the cribs [MK II, playing live with Marr for one of the first times]. Last year the awards were held a hour before the gig, this year they are being held the day before at brixton academy, which will ruin the evening slightly. Last years awards were such a spectacle, but i fear this years will be fairly shite in comparion....
